For the past 3 years, we have helped the European Commission making a brand new ecodesign regulation for the energy efficiency of servers and data storage products in server rooms and data centers. It has been a long process to go from analyses to concrete requirements, during which we have had many interesting discussions with the industry stakeholders. Nevertheless, the effort paid off last Monday, when the Member States voted yes to the proposal with some expected modifications.
The new regulation comprises requirements for servers’ idle state power, active state efficiency, power supplies efficiency, circular economy and information on operating conditions etc.
It is estimated that the regulation would yield approx. 9 – 24 TWh/year electricity savings in 2030, equivalent to 3 – 8 Mt CO2.
The regulation is not officially adopted yet, but it can be expected by spring 2019.
