How do you utilize heat waste to benefit all parties involved? With a holistic approach and close cooperation at all stages. We helped develop the project which distributes heat waste from Novozymes to HOFOR’s district heating network.
Novozymes and HORFOR wanted to use heat waste from the production of enzymes at Novozymes’ production facility in central Copenhagen. The heat waste originates from fermentation processes and used to be ventilated into the air via cooling towers. But now the heat contributes to the district heating network in Copenhagen.
Viegand Maagøe was part of the project from the very beginning as adviser for both Novozymes and the district heating company HOFOR.

Due to the expiry of the Energy Saving Agreement in 2020, the project had a tight schedule. So, the project faced a number of challenges which have been handled with great efficiency through close cooperation between all parties, and among other things secured the necessary regulatory approvals on time.
A solid business case has been established and a technical solution selected.
A 4 MW heat pump has been installed at Novozymes. The temperature of the heat waste is increased with the heat pump, so that the energy can be used for the district heating network. Delivery temperature is up to 80 °C.
The new heat pump began operation in January 2021. Using heat waste, the heat pump delivers approx. 30,000 MWh of district heating equivalent to the heat consumption for approx. 1,700 households.
